56: Gold Star Mother, Donna McGrew

This Memorial Day, we celebrate the life and legacy of Major Shawn Campbell, a Marine who was killed in a training accident in Hawaii, in 2016. His mother, Donna McGrew, tells his story.

————————————————————————————————————————Gold Star Mother, Donna McGrew, lost her son, Major Shawn Campbell, in a helicopter training exercise in Hawaii in 2016. Abandoned by her father before she was born, by her husband shortly after Shawn’s birth, and by her government in the shadowy details surrounding her son’s untimely death, Donna never felt abandoned by God. She felt God’s provision and protection though her difficult childhood and parenting years, her corporate and private careers, multiple health challenges, and the tragedy that changed her forever. Now remarried and retired, Donna recalls the life that shaped her son into the husband, father, military leader and hero he became. On this Memorial Day, we wish to honor the life and legacy of Major Shawn M. Campbell, and the eleven other Marines who perished with him on that fateful day in Hawaii six years ago.
